Fondation Beyeler

Born in 1960 in Padua (Italy), Maurizio Cattelan is one of the most-discussed artists of our day. Back in the 1990s he began to produce sculptures that surprised and astonished the public and the art world. His multi-faceted oeuvre reflects society’s paradoxes and alienation, as well as individuals’ struggle to find their place in it.

Often he represents human figures or stuffed animals desperately searching for a way out oft he dreamlike or tragic situations in which they are entangled. In a humorous and at the same time critical way his works comment on the human existence and the contradictions of our society. Following the announcement of his retirement from the art world, his project for the Fondation Beyeler is awaited with great anticipation. The creatures in his exhibition KAPUTT thrust themselves head through wall right into our consciousness.

Fondation Beyeler is one of the most beautiful and popular museums in Switzerland. The building, designed by Renzo Piano and surrounded by a wonderful park, harbors one of the world’s finest collections of modern art. The Italian architect projected the building in order to radiate simplicity while maintaining harmony with its setting. The Fondation Beyeler organizes high-quality and much admired exhibitions of Modern and Contemporary art, as well as projects in the public space.
