New Zealand Red Cross Nurse Awarded Australian Medal
New Zealand Red Cross nurse Andrew Cameron has been honoured in the Australian Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
Mr Cameron has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for “service to nursing, particularly through a range of roles with the International Committee of the Red Cross”.
Andrew Cameron, who lives in Australia, has been a New Zealand Red Cross aid worker since 2006, and has worked in many challenging missions including Kenya, Sudan, Yemen, South Ossetia and most recently Afghanistan.
His roles have included head nurse, hospital project manager, health coordinator and teaching nurse in trauma and emergency medicine.
In 2011 Mr Cameron was awarded the prestigious Florence Nightingale Medal, and before that he was awarded the New Zealand Operational Service Medal, the New Zealand General Service Medal for Iraq and the New Zealand General Service Medal for Afghanistan.
New Zealand Red Cross national president Dr Jenny McMahon says the award is well-deserved.
“It recognises Andrew’s courage and compassion in helping vulnerable communities and the war wounded over many years on ICRC missions. He has made an outstanding contribution and his many awards recognise this,” she says.
