21st Annual Labour Law Conference 2013

21st Annual Labour Law Conference 2013

Monday, 22nd July

Workplace renewal and productivity growth -
No need for further industrial relations reform

The 21st Annual Labour Law Conference will pose the provocative question: Is the current industrial relations system our best shot at improving productivity and fairness in the workplace?

Australian employers and workers have endured decades of labour law reform but in the run-up to the next election both major political parties are promising no major changes.

This year’s Annual Labour law conference will explore ways of improving productivity and labour relations policy-making within the existing system.

The conference will be opened by former Fair Work Commission President Geoffrey Giudice. He will identify the strengths of the system and ways of managing problems without the need for more ‘system reform’.

The conference will consider how the policy formulation process can be improved to increase support for the existing system and lead to a more stable and durable legislative framework.

This year’s speakers include:

The Honourable Geoffrey Giudice AO, Honorary Professorial Fellow, University of Melbourne

Professor Emeritus Ron McCallum, Sydney Law School, University of Sydney

Professor Barbara Pocock, Director, Centre for Work + Life, University of South Australia

Stephen Smith , Director, National Industrial Relations, AiG

Tim Lyons, Assistant Secretary, ACTU

Josh Bornstein, Principal, Maurice Blackburn Lawyers

Richard Bunting, Partner, Ashurst

Professor Joellen Riley, Dean, Sydney Law School, University of Sydney
