As the US government nuclear negotiations with Iran is continuing, 106 Members of the European Parliament, representing all political groups from 26 member states, issued a joint statement on Iran. The signatories include 3 Vice-Presidents of the Parliament, 2 Committee Chairs and 7 Delegations Chairs.

MEP Gérard Deprez, Chair of Friends of a Free Iran in European parliament said: “EuroMPs are very concerned that the violation of human rights in Iran has been pushed to the side-lines because of the ongoing negotiations.”

He added: “We are concerned about Tehran deceiving the international community on its secret nuclear program as a new nuclear site, Lavizan 3, was revealed on 24 February by the opposition NCRI. We are fully convinced that Tehran has not yet decided to give up its nuclear ambitions.”

The European lawmakers in their joint statement stress: “Iran keeps sidestepping abandoning its nuclear weapons program to impose its dominion over the region. Experience of 12 years indicates that the sole avenue to prevent a military confrontation is to ramp up pressure on Iran and impose biting sanctions.”

To prevent Iran making a nuclear bomb, MEPs emphasized: “Iran needs to adhere to all UN Security Council resolutions with regard to its nuclear program and it should respond to all outstanding IAEA questions while allowing intrusive inspections of all its military and non-military sites whether declared or undeclared.”

Speaking from Brussels today, Deprez said: “The nuclear issue, Iranian regime’s interference and export of fundamentalism in the region, especially in Iraq, Syria, Yemen and Lebanon and also the internal repression cannot be separated and need to be dealt with together. We are particularly concerned about the cruel actions against the Iranian refugees in Camp Liberty in Iraq, the repression of women and, more generally, the systematic human rights violations in Iran.”

The MEPs added: “The situation of human rights in Iran needs to be heeded in all relations with this country. Iran should end the executions, free political prisoners, stop the repression of women and respect the rights and freedoms of the Iranian people.”
