MINISTER KOPU URGES PROVINCIAL GOV’TS TO SPEND WISELY
The Minister for Provincial Government and Institutional Strengthening (MPGIS) Hon. Duddley Kopu has urged Provincial Governments to implement their budgets properly and to ensure services and developments occur where it is needed.
The Minister has made the reminder to the Provincial Governments of Western, Choiseul and Isabel Provinces when he blessed their respective budgets in Honiara yesterday.
Section 30 of the Provincial Government Act 1997 requires the Minister to assent or ‘bless’ the budget to give mandate for its implementation by Provincial Governments upon the enactment of an ordinance by a Provincial Assembly.
Minister Kopu also assured the respective Provincial Governments that the National Government will continue to work in cooperation with these provinces in the implementation of their work programs. The Minister has also warned these Provinces to spend funds on programs they are intended for.
Other provinces including Malaita, Guadalcanal, Temotu, Central, Makira and Renbel are yet to pass and submit their budget for the Minister’s blessing, before 31st March 2015.
