Dr. Ashrawi meets with Swedish Consul General

Dr. Ashrawi meets with Swedish Consul General Ann-Sofie Nilsson

PLO Executive Committee Member Dr. Hanan Ashrawi met with Swedish Consul General Ann-Sofie Nilsson at the PLO Headquarters in Ramallah.

They reviewed the distinctive and special relationship that has historically distinguished relations between Palestine and Sweden, and Dr. Ashrawi expressed her appreciation to Sweden for its genuine commitment to the Palestinian people and for translating its official recognition of the State of Palestine into active support.

She also thanked Sweden for its consistent backing of Palestinian institution and nation building, its continued projects and initiatives in Jerusalem and in Area C, its genuine commitment towards the EU guidelines on settlements and the labeling of settlement produce and products, and its political endeavors in supporting an international conference with clear objectives, terms of reference and firm proscriptions against the illegal settlements and all other violations of international law.

Both parties discussed the deteriorating conditions on the ground and escalating Israeli violations in Palestine as a whole, including the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip.

The discussion also focused on the need for lifting the siege of Gaza and undertaking its reconstruction, achieving national unity and carrying out elections.

They also addressed the issue of bringing the Palestinian legal and institutional system to be consistent with the obligations of Palestine as a signatory to many international conventions and treaties that would guarantee a just system of good governance, as well as provide Palestine with international protection.
