The Third U.S.-Japan Cyber Dialogue

Media Note
Office of the Spokesperson
Washington, DC
July 17, 2015

________________________________________

The third U.S-Japan Cyber Dialogue will be held in Tokyo on July 22, 2015.

This dialogue follows Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s recent visit to Washington in April 2015, during which both the United States and Japan reaffirmed their commitment to working together “to ensure the safe and stable use of cyber space based on the free flow of information and an open internet.”

Officials from relevant ministries and agencies of the two governments will discuss wide-ranging bilateral cooperation on cyber issues, including critical infrastructure protection, capacity building, cybercrime, national security issues in cyberspace, and our common approach in relevant international venues.

This dialogue is expected to further deepen our shared understanding of our respective organizations, policies, and operational architectures, as well as identify additional opportunities to strengthen bilateral cooperation mechanisms going forward.

Mr. Christopher Painter, the Coordinator for Cyber Issues at the U.S. Department of State, will lead the U.S. government interagency delegation, which will include representatives from the Department of State, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Defense, and other agencies.

Mr. Takashi Okada, Japan’s Ambassador in charge of Cyber Policy and Deputy Director-General of Foreign Policy Bureau, will lead the Japanese delegation, which will include representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Security Secretariat, Cabinet Secretariat (Situations Response and Crisis Management), National Center of Incident Readiness and Strategy for Cybersecurity, Cabinet Intelligence and Research Office, National Policy Agency, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, and the Ministry of Defense.

During this trip, Coordinator Painter will also deliver keynote remarks at a cybersecurity conference in Singapore.
