Chamber lends a helping hand

BOARD members of the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) have been very active on the ground with immediate relief supplies given to people severely affected by Tropical Cyclone Winston.

Vice-presidents Vijendra Pillay and Jai Krishna were on the ground in severely affected areas of Ba, Tavua and Rakiraki providing immediate relief supplies in areas which were mostly left unvisited due to terrain issues.

“We had teamed up with other volunteers and were on the ground providing immediate relief supplies, cooked food and water to hundreds of victims,” Mr Pillay said.

“Some of the areas we visited in Ba, Tavua, Rakiraki were far away from the main roads and access to such places has been very difficult at large,” Mr Pillay informed.

He said the timely assistance from Carpenters Motors with four-wheeled off-road vehicles provided a major boost to their relief efforts.

NCCI president Dr Ram Raju has confirmed that the chamber will be organizing a charity golf event very soon to support those affected by TC Winston.

“The last time when we were hit by severe floods in 2012, NCCI carried out a similar fundraiser and we were able to hand over close to $14k to President Epeli Nailatikau,” Dr Raju said.

“We will be able to come up with more ways of helping those in need during our mini-forum this Saturday (March 12) at the Tanoa Skylodge Hotel.”

Meanwhile, NCCI has also donated 100 hurricane lanterns which has been taken to affected people by board-members for distribution last Saturday.
