Improved Access for Muaniweni Farmers
As Fulton Hogan Hiways (FHH) improves Muaniweni Road in Naqali, the close on 200 vegetable, dalo and cassava farmers living along the road are already reporting an improvement in their access to market.
FHH is grading and resheeting the road surface with gravel, as well as removing over-grown vegetation and cleaning out drainage along the road edges.
Farmer Sen Narayan said that he is now “the most happiest and relieved farmer because I now know that my farm has a future in the market.”
“Before, taking my produce to market was a struggle. On rainy days the road would get flooded and really muddy, making it hard for farmers and for students going to school. Carriers and 4-wheel drives were reluctant to carry produce because of the road,” said Mr Narayan.
According to Mr Narayan, the three-kilometre road, which is connected to the Sawani /Serea Highway by Savu Road, has not been worked on for “more than seven years.”
But now he and his neighbours can easily access markets in Nausori, at various hotels and, for some, overseas.
Fulton Hogan Hiways is working closely with the Fiji Roads Authority to provide road maintenance in the Central, Eastern and Northern Divisions.
