Maori Organisation Recieve Red Ribbon at 2016 World Aids Conference Durban
The Red Ribbon 2016 a
joint effort by UNAIDS of 11 UN organisations
UNHCR,
UNICEF, WFP, UNDP, UNFPA, UNODC, UN Women, ILO, UNESCO, WHO
and the World Bank and as such, this year placed particular
emphasis on the organisation's newly approved global
priority areas of action.
This year it is an honour Marama Pala Co-Founder, and Executive Director of the INA (Maori, Indigenous & South Pacific HIV/AIDS Foundation) has accepted this award on behalf of INA at the 2016 World Aids Conference in Durban. Selected from a from a 1000 nominees around the world. INA has been awarded the Global Partnerships (SDG 17) Award.
It is the first time an
Indigenous, Maori, Pacific Island or NZ group has been
acknowledged in this manner.
"The Red Ribbon Award was
first given in 2006 and has recognised 85 organisations from
over 50 different countries since then as leading
community-based responses to AIDS. Such organisations lie at
the heart of the response to the AIDS epidemic –
displaying extraordinary courage, resilience and strength in
addressing one of the greatest challenges of our time."
We take this opportunity to thank our Kaumatua-Patron Dr Huirangi Waikerepuru CNZM, honour our Kuia Mereiwa Broughton QSM and thank our board members Co-Chair Rawiri Jenkins-Evans, Jenni Masters, Te Urutahi Waikererpuru, and Phylesia Acton-Brown. We give thanks to Dame Tariana Turia, Professor Whatarangi Winiata and Dr Peter Sharples KNZM.CBE with the Maori Party, who supported the creation of an independent HIV/AIDS NGO organisation for Maori.
