Balance for Better, PIANGO Pressed for Progress

“Women’s work is never done and women hold up half the sky.”

Pacific Islands Association of Non-Governmental Organisation (PIANGO) Executive Director Emele Duituturaga echoed these words as the world commemorate International Women’s Day.

PIANGO, she said is committed to the achievement of gender equality.

“Right now is a great and important time in history to do everything possible to help forge a more gender-equal and gender-balanced world. Women have come a long way, yet there’s still more to be achieved,” Duituturaga said.

PIANGO subscribes to the Istanbul Principles for Development Effectiveness adopted by global CSOs. Istanbul Principle No 2 is to embody gender equality and equity while promoting women and girl’s rights.

With the International Women’s Day 2019 campaign theme of #BalanceforBetter - a call-to-action for driving gender balance across the world- Duituturaga said they continue to promote the SDGs and SDG 5 which aims to end all forms of discrimination against women and girls everywhere.

“PIANGO will continue to promote CSO partnerships for development effectiveness and support programme activities to reduce and eliminate violence against women and girls and to promote economic and political empowerment,” Duituturaga added.

“We salute CSO organisations especially women NGOs who have been at the forefront of promoting human rights and those providing services for women and children.”

She salutes women leaders in homes, in the villages, at work, in business, in parliaments who continue to break the glass ceiling, open doors and show that women and girls have what it takes.

Duituturaga said “today we dedicate our work to our families - women and girls, mother and daughters, grandmothers whose labour of love keeps families together, the bedrock of society.”
