The International Theatre Takes Over The Campania Teatro Festival

More than 10 worldwide companies will present in Naples their new shows

Also this year, the Campania Teatro Festival, directed by the Italian writer and playwright Ruggero Cappuccio, brings for its 15th edition several shows from all around the world to the beautiful city of Naples. Following the last editions of the event, the Festival’s program especially highlights French dramaturgy and productions: after the staging of many shows featuring Daniel Auteuil, Mathilda May, Sly Johnson, José Montalvo, Dominique Noel, and the Swiss director Martin Zimmermann, other international shows will kick off soon on the stage of the Festival.

Today on June 27th and tomorrow on 28th, it will be staged for the first time the novel Smith & Wesson, written by one of the most well-known Italian authors Alessandro Baricco, who on this occasion proves himself as stage director too. His adaptation, produced by Théâtre de Lièges, will feature two French actors, Christophe Lambert and Laurent Caron, as the two main characters, who are about to achieve an extraordinary feat: diving into Niagara Falls. The focus on the French productions will end on July 9th with the extraordinary performance starred by the British renowned actress Charlotte Rampling, on the stage together with the Franco-American cellist Sonia Wieder-Atherton in Shakespeare/Bach. This remarkable show (produced by Théâtre Des Bouffes Du Nord), combining Bard’s verses with the famous suites composed by Bach, will be premiered at Teatro Mercadante.

The international offer of the Festival will keep on going by presenting a series of theatrical works coming from South America to Arab countries: on July 3rd and 4th, at Sala Assoli (nearby Quartieri Spagnoli of Naples), there will be the performative installation Altamira 2042 directed by the Brazilian performer Gabriela Carneiro da Cunha and created from the testimony of the Xingu River about the Belo Monte Dam.

The following days of July will feature at Teatro Politeama many works from the geopolitical contexts of Kuwait, Syria, and Lebanon. On July 2nd, it will be presented the European premiere of I M E D E A, a free adaptation of the Ancient Greek Myth of Euripides, written and directed by Kuwaitian playwright and director Sulayman Al-Bassam, on the stage together with Hala Omran and Oussama Jamei. Then, on July 5th, Ramzi al-Choukair will bring to the stage in absolute preview Palmyre, Les Bourreaux, the last part of a trilogy based on direct reports by prisoners’ testimonies of the Syrian regime. Finally, on July 10th the dance performance Told by my mother directed by the Lebanese choreographer Ali Chahrour, will close the International section by telling stories and memories belonging to Beirut, its suburbs, and families.
