A package believed to contain about 40 kilograms of cocaine has turned up on a Norfolk Island beach.
A statement from the Australian Federal Police said the package, which is thought to be made up of individual bricks, "had been in the water for a significant amount of time" before it was found by a tourist at Anson Bay on Tuesday afternoon.
RNZ Pacific understands the parcel was found by a group of holiday makers strolling on the beach on Tuesday.
"Investigations into the source of the drugs are continuing including liaising with international partners," the police statement said.
"NIPF (Norfolk Island Police Force) are asking the community to report any suspicious packages, and ask that they do not handle them as they could contain dangerous items/substances."
