Aotearoa To Host Nationwide Week Of Climate Action In Celebration Of AlterCOP30
Aotearoa is set to bring the spirit of the global climate summit COP home this November, as climate groups across the motu join forces for AlterCOP30 New Zealand - 5 days of climate kōrero, creativity and collective action.
Running from 17 - 21 November 2025, AlterCOP30 New Zealand will feature more than 10 events across Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and online, inviting people from all backgrounds to connect, learn, and take action on the biggest challenge of our time.
AlterCOP, founded by The Matcha Initiative and The Transmutation Principle, is a community-led alternative to the UN Climate COP. It’s created so that climate action isn’t just something discussed by world leaders, but something shaped by all of us.
In Aotearoa, the event is led by Climate Fresk Aotearoa, Climate Club Aotearoa, Climate Training Co., Climate Crew, and &BLOOM, uniting to bring the international movement to local shores through a 5 day-long Fresk Festival.
“COP is the push to ramp up ambition on climate action for politicians, but much of the change we need to see will be enacted in cities, at home and in our organisations - so there’s a lot we can all do ourselves to build the future we want to see.” Mabin Sutton
At the heart of the programme are Climate Fresk workshops, a hands-on card game developed in France that’s been played by more than 2 million people worldwide. The Fresk helps participants unpack the science of climate change and explore practical steps to tackle it in their own communities, workplaces, and organisations.
“The Fresk is about seeing the big picture and turning that understanding into action,” says Mabin Sutton. “It’s a chance for people to learn, reflect, and step up as part of a collective movement. - Emily Mabin Sutton runs Fresks across Aotearoa with councils, businesses and communities.
From climate education sessions to online kōrero and community challenges, AlterCOP30 Aotearoa aims to empower everyday Kiwis to be part of a global movement for change.
