Further Statement On The Bondi Terror Tragedy

The terror tragedy which befell the Jewish community in Australia has reverberated beyond its borders and is felt deeply in New Zealand and elsewhere. When communities are targeted because of their faith, and when innocent bystanders as well as members of the Police are killed or injured, this constitutes nothing less than hate inspired violence that has no place in any civilised society.

We note that it was similar hate-inspired terrorism that resulted in 51 shuhada and 40 bullet wounded in New Zealand. Such acts of terrorism need to be condemned by all.

FIANZ is committed to taking practical steps beyond condemnation alone. We will continue to work actively against all forms of discrimination, racism, antisemitism, and Islamophobia. We also recognise the importance of greater awareness of how international events can impact local communities. Global acts of violence have a real and lasting effect on social cohesion, community wellbeing, and the sense of safety.

FIANZ extends its deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives and to those injured. We have already reached out to the Jewish community in New Zealand to express our sympathy and support.

We acknowledge the sacrifice courage and sacrifice of law enforcement officers and first responders. We also recognise the bravery of the person who disarmed one of the gunmen.

At moments like this, we should focus on unity, compassion, and prayer, and reject all forms of violence. Communities with different beliefs and values should share a commitment to social cohesion and peace.
