Multicultural New Zealand Statement On The Bondi Beach Attack, New South Wales

Multicultural New Zealand (MNZ) express our deepest sorrow and solidarity with the people of New South Wales and all those affected by the tragic attack at Bondi Beach. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, first responders, and the wider community during this painful time.

MNZ President, Pancha Narayanan said that “This attack is an assault on our shared freedoms and sense of safety. It is a stark reminder that such acts of violence can occur anywhere and affect people of all backgrounds”. He added that “MNZ reiterates its long-held position that humanity must always prevail above any religion, ideology, or belief system. Violence has no place in our communities”.

New Zealand’s strength lies in its diverse communities and the enduring partnership with tangata whenua. In times of heightened emotion, words and actions matter. By working together, grounded in manaakitanga, mutual respect, and shared responsibility, we can foster safer, more connected communities. Through dialogue, cultural understanding, and collective care, we can build resilience against fear and hatred. We urge individuals, families, community leaders and community groups to:

  • Act with care and kindness toward one another, particularly in how we engage within our communities and on social media
  • Create safe spaces at home and on-line (social media) for kōrero where people can express concerns, grief, or fear without judgment.
  • Check in proactively with youth, elders, and newly arrived communities who may feel particularly unsettled.
  • Share accurate, verified information only and discourage rumours and misinformation.
  • Reinforce messages of unity, non-violence, and inclusion in all communications.
  • Be alert to signs of rising tension or distress and connect people to call NZ Police on 105 or fill the form at: https://www.police.govt.nz/use-105
  • Pause or moderate online community forums if discussions become harmful or inflammatory.

We also encourage people to remain aware of their immediate surroundings and to look out for one another. This is especially important as we enter the holiday season, a time when communities gather to celebrate, reflect, and connect.

MNZ stands with all communities in Australia and New Zealand who seek peace, dignity, and unity. Together, we can ensure that compassion and humanity remain stronger than violence
