There are extra smiles all around at Symbio Wildlife Park as two of its cutest new residents 'adorable quokka joeys' have officially begun taking their first hops outside their mother’s pouch.

Born late last year, the joeys arrived just months after their parents joined the Symbio family in May 2025. Now, after spending their early months growing safely tucked away, the young quokkas are confidently emerging to explore their surroundings under the watchful eyes of their mums, delighting keepers and visitors alike.

Often dubbed “the world’s happiest animal,” quokkas are renowned for their friendly expressions and gentle nature. Spotting a joey peeking out of the pouch or taking those first tentative hops is a special milestone, marking an important stage in their development.

With the joeys now confirmed as a male and female, the team at Symbio Wildlife Park have affectionately named the duo 'Djinda' meaning Star in the Indigenous language of the Noongar people and 'Jarrah' as a nod to the WA endemic eucalyptus species.

“Watching these joeys take their first hops is incredibly rewarding,” said Daniel Rumsey, Senior Zookeeper at Symbio Wildlife Park. “From tiny, pink newborns to now confidently exploring their world, it’s a wonderful example of successful breeding and dedicated animal care during their first year at Symbio.”
