Global Call For Action On Iran: New Zealand Urged To Act On Human Rights Atrocities And National Security Risks
New Zealand will join a Global Day of Action on 14 February, responding to an international call issued by Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, the recognised leader of Iran’s democratic opposition, in solidarity with the Iranian people and their ongoing struggle for freedom, dignity, and fundamental human rights.
Iran is in the midst of a sustained revolution driven by ordinary citizens — women, men, and children — who are demanding an end to decades of repression by the Islamic Republic. The response of the regime has been brutal and systematic. Credible reports confirm that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has been responsible for the killing of more than 50,000 civilians, the injury of over 330,000 people, and the blinding of thousands. Tens of thousands have been arrested, tortured, and executed following sham proceedings, without due process and without access to legal representation. These are not isolated abuses. They amount to widespread and ongoing crimes against humanity.
The Iranian community of New Zealand, alongside supporters of human rights and democracy, will take part in this global action to send a clear message: silence and inaction are no longer acceptable.
Our demands of the New Zealand Government are clear and urgent:
· Designate the IRGC as a terrorist organisation, in line with international partners including Australia, which has already taken decisive steps to address the threat posed by the IRGC beyond Iran’s borders.
· Recognise Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi as the key opposition leader, with significant support among Iranians inside and outside the country, prepared to guide a transitional process that would lead to a national referendum and democratic elections.
· Immediately expel the ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and cease legitimising a regime that does not represent the Iranian people and is responsible for mass atrocities.
· Take proactive steps to protect New Zealanders, rather than waiting for the consequences of IRGC activity to reach New Zealand soil.
New Zealand is currently lagging behind many comparable democracies in its response to these grave violations of human rights and the clear security risks posed by the IRGC. Continued delay undermines New Zealand’s long-standing commitment to the rule of law, human rights, and international accountability.
This global action on 14 February is not merely symbolic; it represents a call for principled leadership, unequivocal condemnation, and decisive, concrete measures. The Iranian people have made their aspirations unmistakably clear. It is now incumbent upon New Zealand to determine its position and to act in accordance with its stated commitment to human rights, the rule of law, and international accountability.
