The long range forecast from Weather Workshop for all of New Zealand to midnight Saturday.
Situation: A disturbed westerly flow covers much of the country from today through to Thursday. A trough within this flow should cross the country tomorrow turning the flow northwesterly for a time ahead of it. Late on Thursday a low in the central Tasman Sea advances onto New Zealand. The low then covers much of the country on Friday and moves away to the east on Saturday allowing a colder southerly flow to spread over New Zealand.
NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, COROMANDEL PENINSULA, WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI, TARANAKI, TAIHAPE ,TAUPO, WANGANUI and MANAWATU: A mix of showers and fine periods today with westerlies. Widespread rain or showers tomorrow with winds tending northwest for a time. Showers ease Thursday with fine periods developing. Further showers or rain on Friday with colder southwesterly winds developing. Showers and southwesterlies on Saturday.
BAY of PLENTY and ROTORUA: Mostly fine today. Showers becoming widespread tomorrow with northwesterly winds. Becoming mostly fine on Thursday but showers and southwesterly winds develop Friday. Further showers on Saturday.
GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: Mostly fine today but high cloud increasing tomorrow with rain about the ranges. Brief morning rain clearing Thursday and becoming fine. A change spreading north on Friday to cold southerly winds with showers. Further showers and cold southerly winds on Saturday.
WELLINGTON: Mostly fine today. Cloudy tomorrow with late rain developing. A few morning showers clearing Thursday. Showers and cold southerly winds developing Friday with further showers and southerlies on Saturday.
NELSON and MARLBOROUGH: Mostly fine today but cloud increasing tomorrow with rain spreading from the western ranges later. Mostly fine Thursday but cold southerly winds and showers developing Friday. Showers and southerlies easing on Saturday.
BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: Rain or showers for much of the period with west to northwest winds. Friday sees showers clearing from the south with the flow turning southwest. Becoming mostly fine Saturday.
CANTERBURY and OTAGO: Cloud and coastal fog areas clearing today and becoming mostly fine. High cloud increasing tomorrow with rain about the ranges. Mainly fine dry weather on Thursday but cold southerly winds spread north on Friday with rain or showers and snow lowering about the ranges. Further cold showery conditions on Saturday.
SOUTHLAND: Cloudy with patchy rain clearing today. Cloudy tomorrow with scattered rain developing. Becoming mostly fine on Thursday but cold southerly winds and rain spread north on Friday with snow lowering about the ranges. Further cold showery conditions on Saturday.
CHATHAM ISLANDS: Continuing unsettled for
much of the period with rain or showers at times. Becoming
colder on Saturday with strong southerly winds
developing.
