The Situation: A disturbed westerly flow covers the country. A front embedded in the low should move onto the country later today. A low is developing in the South Tasman Sea.
And now the forecast to midnight tonight:
NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI, TARANAKI, TAIHAPE, WANGANUI and MANAWATU: A mix of cloud and fine breaks at first with a few showers becoming more widespread and turning to rain for a time this afternoon. Westerly winds.
COROMANDEL PENINSULA, BAY of PLENTY/ROTORUA and TAUPO: Mainly fine at first. Cloud increasing later with a few showers developing then becoming heavier and more widespread later in the day. Westerly winds.
GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY and WAIRARAPA: A few showers developing about the main ranges. High cloud and dry elsewhere. West to northwest winds.
WELLINGTON: Cloud increasing with a few showers developing about the valleys this afternoon and becoming widespread this evening. Northerly winds.
NELSON: Cloudy at times with a few showers about the western ranges. Southwest winds.
BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: Cloudy with outbreaks of rain. West to southwest winds.
MARLBOROUGH: A few showers about the sounds, otherwise high cloud and dry. West to northwest winds.
CANTERBURY and OTAGO: A few coastal fog patches clearing and becoming mainly fine with westerly winds. A few showers developing about the alps this afternoon and high cloud increasing elsewhere later.
SOUTHLAND: Mainly cloudy with scattered rain developing later. West to northwest winds.
CHATHAM ISLANDS: Mostly cloudy with showers and northwest winds.
THE OUTLOOK FOR TOMORROW: Showers to much of the North Island with westerlies continuing. Rain developing on the South Island west coast with extensive high cloud in the east. At the Chathams, Cloudy with further outbreaks of rain.
