Workshop:
The Situation: A high is drifting east away from the North Island. A northwest flow is strengthening over the South Island and lower North Island ahead of a front in the Tasman Sea.
And now the forecast to midnight tonight:
NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND, COROMANDEL PENINSULA, BAY of PLENTY/ROTORUA, WAIKATO, WAITOMO, TAUMARANUI and TAUPO: Mostly fine apart from a few cloudy periods. Northerly winds.
TAIHAPE, TARANAKI, WANGANUI and MANAWATU: Cloudy at times with northwest winds becoming gusty late in the day.
WELLINGTON: Cloud increasing with northerlies becoming gusty.
GISBORNE, HAWKES BAY, WAIRARAPA: Mainly fine. Some high cloud developing later. Northwest winds becoming gusty in Wairarapa towards evening.
NELSON and MARLBOROUGH: High cloud increasing but remaining dry. Northwest winds.
BULLER, WESTLAND and FIORDLAND: Cloudy with drizzly rain south of the glaciers spreading further north. Northwest winds.
CANTERBURY: High cloud increasing throughout the day but remaining dry. Northwest winds inland and northeasterlies about the coast.
OTAGO and SOUTHLAND: High cloud thickening with patchy rain developing about the western ranges late in the day. West to northwest winds.
CHATHAM ISLANDS: Mostly cloudy with northwest winds strengthening.
THE OUTLOOK FOR TOMORROW: Rain about the south and west of the South Island with falls spilling over the alps at times and cloudy skies elsewhere. In the North Island, cloudy in the west with a few showers but only high cloud along the east coast with warm northwest winds. At the Chatham Islands, mostly cloudy with northwest winds.
