16 August 2006
On behalf of the Auckland Regional Council, Chairman Michael Lee expressed profound sorrow at the passing of the Maori Queen Dame Te Atairangikaahu.
Cr Lee noted that Tainui’s tribal territory includes approximately half of the Auckland region.
“We mourn the passing of this great New Zealander,” says Cr Lee.
“A protégé of the great Princess Te Puea, Dame Te Ata was an exemplary leader, much loved by her people and greatly respected by New Zealanders from all walks of life.
“We express our sorrow and condolences to Dame Te Ata’s family, the Kahui Ariki, and to the Tainui people and to all of the King Movement supporters.”
