Otara Youth Collective Re-define Youth

Wellingtonian Eva-Maria and the Otara Youth Collective Re-define Youth!

For centuries, parents have been giving other parents advice on how to raise their teenagers and how to communicate better with their children as they change into young, independent adults. However, with the 21st century comes some changes and it seems the tables have turned - now it is teenagers themselves who are helping parents to raise their teens and ‘tweens!

This Tuesday, the Otara Youth Collective hosted an evening out for parents, teachers, youth workers, and employers of young staff, and of course, teens, to come and listen to published author, international speaker, and family coach - Eva-Maria!

With a great turnout, the evening consisted of a 2 hour workshop with Wellingtonian Eva-Maria on the three key areas on how to build a strong relationship with any teen. Her strength as an author and as a coach is that she is focused on understanding both sides to any story, helping to compromise and settle misunderstandings between individuals and across generations. The workshop really lived up to its guarantee to improve relationships at work and at home and to alter the way people view teenagers. She used real-life examples and focused on short term and long term successes to improve relationships between youth and adults. During the course of the night, the Otara Youth Collective were also busy with their extensive baking stall, in the end raising a substantial amount to go towards their next project – the “iChoose” DVD to educate and let youth in Otara know all about the exciting projects and centres there are around Otara for youth to get involved with and never be bored!

All the supportive feedback the night received goes to show that the Otara Youth Collective are really starting to get involved in the community and to get themselves out there and known by all. They are making headway in terms of supporting young people as well as their whole community. Everyone seems to be eagerly anticipating the launch of their DVD, scheduled for March 2010.

“The Otara Youth Collective are taking on some great initiatives to help the greater community – by their projects, ideas, and for example tonight’s workshop only goes to show that youth have much potential, and are proud to help their communities – which is something that shouldn’t go unnoticed. An inspiring group – they will go a long way”

“I was skeptical about coming to the evening, as I’d been to many talks before about teenagers, and none of them seem to bring that much needed bridge between adults and teenagers. I think Eva-Maria, and OYC’s initiative to bring her over here really helped the audience tonight to get in touch with their past teenage years, and see a different perspective from a young speaker about the importance, simplicity and value of better relationships with the teens in our society.
