Christchurch earthquake - CBD Cordon Update

Christchurch earthquake - CBD Cordon Update

5:40pm: Monday 6 September

The cordoned off area of the CBD has been reduced with the area from Gloucester to Armagh Streets being reopened from 1.30pm Monday 6 September. All buildings in this area have been inspected and building owners will have a placard on their buildings.

John Buchan, Rescue Manager, advises that there is full access for building owners and the public in this area except where damaged and unsafe buildings have been isolated with barriers and tagged yellow and red.

A green placard means the building is considered safe for its intended use - 79% of buildings have received a green placard.

A yellow placard means the building has limited access, as noted on the placard, and further structural assessment is needed by the owners consultants - 16% of buildings have received a yellow placard.

A red placard means the building is considered unsafe and further structural assessment is needed. These buildings have generally been isolated with barriers - 5% of buildings have received a red placard.

The area that remains cordoned off is bounded by:- - Armagh Street

- St Asaph Street

- Durham/Tennyson Street

- Madras Street

We are working on reopening the area bounded by Colombo Street and Durhan/Tennyson Streets and expect that this and some other adjacent areas and Cathedral Square may be able to be opened this evening.

A specific message for employers and building owners about access to buildings inside and outside the cordoned off area will be released shortly.
