Earthquake impact on licensed premises

A number of licensed premises and bars have been affected by the initial earthquake and subsequent aftershocks causing some to be classified by engineers as being unsafe or needing restricted access.

The result is that many will be unable to trade for some time or may not be able to trade in the same premises again.

The hospitality sector of Christchurch is an important stakeholder in the local economy and it is at stressful times like these that it can be important for people to share a quiet, sensible, drink with friends. When the ability to trade is restricted by structural unsoundness it can not only affect livelihoods but also the enjoyment of the community.

It is with this in mind that the Police and Council alcohol harm reduction teams in Canterbury are able to assist premises who face the prospect of restrictions of trade with advice on how to apply for temporary licenses for a change of location.
