Rail Death In Te Kuiti
At 1.48am on Sunday 3 October Te Kuiti and Otorohanga Police were called to the railway yard area in the centre of Te Kuiti township.
The driver of a southbound train travelling through Te Kuiti had seen a person laying on the railway tracks, and despite applying all emergency braking systems, has failed to stop in time. The unknown person suffered multiple injuries, and was killed instantly.
Police at this stage are unable to identify the deceased male and are seeking help from the public.
The matter has been referred to the Coroners office.
