Pike River Disaster - Hamilton Memorial Service

A Civic memorial service for the 29 victims of the Pike River Mine disaster is to take place at Hamilton’s Memorial Park on Saturday.

People are asked to gather from 7.30pm for an 8pm start.

The service is interdenominational and everyone in Hamilton is invited to attend.

Hamilton Mayor Julie Hardaker will speak at the service, which will be led by celebrant Kay Gregory. The Hamilton Gospel Choir will provide the music.

“We have all been touched by the tragic events as they have unfolded in Greymouth this week,” Ms Hardaker said.

“It is a terrible event for the families, all of the people involved in the rescue attempt, and the whole country. Our hearts go out to everyone at this very sad time. ” Meanwhile, a book of condolence for Hamilton people to sign has today been set up in the main reception of Hamilton City Council. The book will be sent to the Mayor of Greymouth, on behalf of the people of Hamilton.

People wanting to donate to the families of the victims are encouraged to contribute to the “Pike River Mine BNZ Appeal” 02 0844 0074501-00.
