Supporting Seniors
In Christchurch today the Age Concern New Zealand national president Liz Baxendine reported
"People are looking out for one another as they did last time round but this time but I think more social support is needed because the emotional stress, physical harm and property damage experienced is much greater. "
A good number of older people live alone. Some are struggling to cope and may need friends and neighbours help to get access to the available water and also to use toilets."
She said" It's heartening and commendable that the Ministry of Social Development is contacting seniors and disabled people and providing an 0800 number for them to call if specific assistance is required.
Mrs Baxendine believes many older people will be using their coping skills and self-reliance acquired through a lifetime of wars, Depression and change to get themselves and help others through this major crisis.
