Update ChristChurch Cathedral 12:05pm, Friday 25th February 2011

ChristChurch Cathedral Engineers will this morning begin work required at ChristChurch Cathedral to prepare for the eventual safe removal of deceased persons.

Loose and insecure masonry will be carefully removed from the site of the damaged cathedral to enable USAR teams to safely search through the rubble.

Two cranes will be used for the work, which engineers describe as delicate, difficult and likely to take quite some time.

Engineers will be on site at all times to direct the work. Dean of Christchurch, the Very Rev Peter Beck will be available to speak to media later in the day.

Gordon Campbell: On The Public Sector Carnage, And Misogyny As Terrorism

It’s a simple deal. We pay taxes in order to finance the social services we want and need. The carnage now occurring across the public sector though, is breaking that contract. Over 3,000 jobs have been lost so far. Many are in crucial areas like Education where the impact of losing support staff is either going to fall back on teachers, or result in crucial things being done poorly by the overworked survivors at the Ministry. Similarly, Oranga Tamariki is set to lose nearly 10% of its staff. While OT has problems, a reduction on this scale can only make things worse.
