Labour’s environment spokeswoman Dr Megan Woods visited Bay of Plenty Regional Council today to be briefed on progress in cleaning up last month’s oil spill at the Port of Tauranga.
Dr Woods, who is MP for Wigram, spent time with Regional On-Scene Commander Harbour Master Peter Buell and Deputy Chief Executive Eddie Grogan at the Council’s Incident Command Centre learning more about the Council’s smooth response to the spill, which was discovered on 27 April.
Teams led by Regional Council staff, Maritime New Zealand and iwi have been cleaning up oil spots around the harbour, marina and port area. Much of the work has had to be done by hand to protect sensitive sites, such as Motuopuhi Island and urupa near Maungatapu.
