Deconstruction starts on 61 Molesworth St

Deconstruction of 61 Molesworth St will start this afternoon, Thursday 24 November.

Mike Scott, Manager of Building Consents and Compliance, said demolition company CERES will start work on demolishing the adjacent podium part of the building.

“To move the high-reach crane into position to deconstruct the top floors of the building, we need to first demolition the adjacent podium. This initial work will take around two days.

“While this work is happening, the high-reach crane will be moved on site tomorrow and will hopefully start work on the top floors over the weekend.”

The deconstruction work will take between 10 days to two weeks to complete, weather permitting. Scott says cordons might be reduced after a week’s work.

“Certainly, when we start moving the work to the rear of the site and the risk of collapse reduces we can look to opening part, maybe one side, of Molesworth Street up to vehicles and pedestrians.”

The council and CERES have a management plan for the removal of all waste created as result of the deconstruction.

“As the demolition takes place, dust suppression will be used constantly to help contain dust from building materials, including asbestos,” he said.

“The air quality will be constantly monitored at a number of places around the site, and if necessary, deconstruction work will be stopped immediately.” Mr Scott said.

All material from the building will be disposed of appropriately. This work will take around three months to complete.
