Local communities will be encouraging people to get out and vote for Māori wards in Hīkoi ki te Pōti / March and Vote on the 26th and 27th of September.

The national day of action has been called by Toitū Te Tiriti and ActionStation, and led by local community groups and leaders.
Events include marches, gatherings, letterbox drops and more in nine different locations including Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington), Kāpiti, Te Papaioea (Palmerston North), Whanganui, Tūranganui ā Kiwa (Gisborne), Heretaunga (Hastings), Whakatāne, Waipā and Whangārei.
ActionStation Director, Kassie Hartendorp says that it’s important for people who care about keeping Māori representation on councils to show up to vote.
“It’s disappointing that councils have been forced into having costly, unnecessary and discriminatory referendums. But communities are really coming together to keep Māori wards. One example is the For Wards Hawkes Bay group who have been overwhelmed with requests of giant love heart placards for Māori wards.”
“While the referendums are a bad faith attempt by the government to diminish the voice of Māori on local councils, the silver lining is that this issue is bringing people from all walks of life together to honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi.”
Information on local events can be found via Toitū Te Tiriti or ActionStation social media.
