Bakers prepare for Hot Cross Bun blitz

Bakers Delight bakeries around the country are gearing up for a Hot Cross Bun blitz next Thursday ahead of the Easter weekend.

The bakery chain expect to bake over 250,000 fresh buns on ‘Bun Thursday’, a baking term to describe the day before Easter Friday and one of the busiest days on the baking calendar.

Bakers Delight have been baking Hot Cross Buns since the last week of January and expect to have baked close to 1 million buns by the end of the Easter period.

The Kiwi love affair with Hot Cross Buns has not abated this year and bakers are recommending that customers buy their buns early next week to avoid disappointment, says Bakers Delight General Manager Colleen Milne.

“‘Bun Thursday’ is the day that people blitz Hot Cross Buns to stock up for the Easter weekend,” she says.

“We recommend that people get in early to avoid missing out of freshly baked buns. Despite baking extra to cater for the masses, there is always a Hot Cross Bun buying frenzy on Bun Thursday and we’d hate for people to miss out on their Easter fix by leaving it too late,” says Milne.

When picking the perfect Hot Cross Bun, look the quality of the baking and ingredients, says Milne.

“The best Hot Cross Buns are made fresh from scratch with the perfect balance of fruit, at least 30 percent, and spice. They’re best served slightly warm either fresh from the oven or toasted and with lashings of butter, though this tends to be a very personal preference,” says Milne.

There are 22 Bakers Delight bakeries in Auckland and five Christchurch stores, as well as bakeries in Hamilton, Hastings, Mt Maunganui, Tauranga, Rotorua, Taupo, and Lower Hutt.

All Bakers Delight products are baked fresh each day and any leftover bread at the end of the day is donated to charity.
