Quake: Canterbury University Update

It's the end of day six and we've made massive progress on our re-start programme today.

Over 400 staff attended a health and safety briefing then headed to their buildings for clean up. You can see from the video posted on our website just how efficient UC staff can be. We have even larger groups of staff coming onto campus tomorrow. Thank you again to all our volunteers for your work in readying the university for staff return on Monday 13th, student return on Wednesday 15th and the start of teaching programmes on Monday 20th September.

We also hosted a visit by Minister Joyce today. His media statement is also posted on our website. I took the opportunity to raise with the Minister a number of matters relating to student welfare, learning resources and other implications of the earthquake. I also confirmed our commitment to work with the Ministry of Education and Tertiary Education Commission to ensure that students are not financially disadvantaged and that UC as an institution will not be financially disadvantaged as a result of the earthquake. We are committed to working to mitigate any adverse effects of the earthquake.

We are making very good progress and barring further significant aftershocks, are very much on track. Just to remind you, the timetable for tomorrow's voluntary working bee is:

Friday 10 September at 9am: Geography; Gateway Antarctica; Psychology and Sociology; School of Law; English; History, Modern Languages; Erskine; Rutherford (Briefing C1).

Friday 10 September at 12noon: Fine Arts and Music (including houses); Social Work; Aotahi: Maori and Indigenous Studies; Macmillan Brown Centre for Pacific Studies; Registry (Briefing C1).

Friday 10 September at 1.30pm: College of Education, Dovedale campus (Briefing Jack Mann Auditorium).

A further reminder is that due to health and safety requirements, there is a curfew on campus 6pm-7am until Friday 17th September. Staff coming onto the Ilam campus before Monday 13th September are required to register at NZi3, which will be open from 7am-7pm. If staff from the College of Education wish to come onto the Ilam campus they will also need to sign in at NZi3.
