PPTA to boards: Donate strike savings to Canterbury
As teachers countrywide prepare for a day of action to mark Wednesday’s strike, PPTA is calling on boards of trustees to donate teachers’ wages saved to Canterbury’s quake relief fund.
PPTA president Kate Gainsford said the money saved through not paying teachers’ wages on September 15 could add up to a sizable contribution to Canterbury’s mayoral relief fund.
PPTA’s Auckland region also passed a formal recommendation to express solidarity with schools in the Canterbury region by calling on the government to transfer teachers’ salaries saved on strike day to the fund.
Gainsford said there had been an outpouring of concern from members throughout the country who wished to offer their support.
Rallies will be held up and down the country (details below) on Wednesday and collection buckets will be present at these, Gainsford said.
