Extended applications - Fulbright-Harkness Fellowship

In February we sent you notice of the 1 April closing date for applications for the Fulbright-Harkness New Zealand Fellowship. We have now extended the closing date for this award until 1 May. Please see the amended call for applications below.

Last year’s Fulbright-Harkness New Zealand Fellow, Peter Griffin from the Science Media Centre, recently gave a seminar about his exchange experience at our office in Wellington: www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfrP-6wTqBU

Fulbright New Zealand and the New Zealand Harkness Fellowships Trust invite applications for the Fulbright-Harkness New Zealand Fellowship, which offers the opportunity for an emerging New Zealand leader in any field of study or vocation other than health care* to study or research in the US for a minimum of six weeks. Successful grantees will receive NZ$15,000 (plus a basic health benefit plan) towards a short fellowship programme of their own design at any US university or institution.

The Fulbright-Harkness New Zealand Fellowship aims to reinforce New Zealand-United States links by improving cross-fertilisation of ideas and experience between the two countries; to enable established or potential leaders and opinion formers in New Zealand to benefit from new ideas, practices and contacts in the US; and to increase Fellow’s abilities to bring about change and improvements in New Zealand.
The 2012 Fellow, Peter Griffin from the Science Media Centre, undertook an intensive seven week research programme into public interest journalism. Peter visited many high profile media organisations including the Center for Public Integrity in Washington, DC and the California HealthCare Foundation Center for Health Reporting in Oakland, California. He blogged his observations of media trends in the US and New Zealand at www.futurenews.co.nz and reports on his exchange experience in this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfrP-6wTqBU

Applications for the 2013 Fulbright-Harkness New Zealand Fellowship close at 5:00pm on Wednesday 1 May.

See www.fulbright.org.nz/awards/nzscholar/fulbright-harknessnz or contact Stefanie Joe at Fulbright New Zealand for further information – stefanie@fulbright.org.nz / (04) 494 1507

*Candidates in the field of health care should apply for the Harkness Fellowships in Health Care Policy and Practice provided by The Commonwealth Fund, applications for which close in September: www.fulbright.org.nz/awards/nzscholar/harknessfellowships

Gordon Campbell: Classics - Tales From Moominvalley
Can’t speak for the reading end of it but the Moomins ( or maybe the story about Margaret Wise Brown) were the most enjoyable subject to think about and write about during these whole first 50 issues of Werewolf. For that reason – and because the Moomins always reward re-reading – I’ve decided to reprint it. The only added element is a link to an interesting hour long documentary about Tove Jansson. More>>
