Mt Ruapehu: Climber in Serious Condition

Mt Ruapehu: Climber in Serious Condition

The 22-year-old climber in a serious condition in Waikato Hospital is William Pike, a primary school teacher from Auckland.

Mr Pike is in a serious condition with hypothermia and both legs are crushed. He is in intensive care preparing for surgery later this morning.

His parents Barry and Tracy (crrct) say their son is a passionate climber. "He lives to climb."

Mr Pike is a member of the Alpine Club and was in the Dome Valley Hut when a huge rock came through the roof and crushed his legs.

"He was in a place that he loved. He is a very conscientious climber and an incredibly active person," said Mrs Pike.

Mr Pike was with three companions including a fellow school teacher who he trained with.

The family are unavailable for any comment until after Mr Pike's operation.

I will provide updates.
