South Island Alliance partners with Orion Health

The South Island Alliance today announces that it has selected Orion Health, a leading provider of health IT solutions, as its preferred provider to work on planning for a new patient administration system for the South Islands’ one million residents and five South Island District Health Boards (DHBs). Orion Health will work with the Alliance to develop a system that will be the foundation for future innovations, enabling greater collaboration for care providers and patients and helping to deliver better health outcomes. The system will build on several existing regional IT initiatives, and together will result in significant process improvements and organisational efficiencies.

South Island Alliance Information Services chairman Dr Andrew Bowers comments "The South Island DHBs collaborative approach to implementing a new patient administration model, along with the functionalities it will provide, are ground breaking for New Zealand. This is a huge project that will result in a more streamlined patient journey through health services, from the community to the hospital and beyond, and coordinate care between different hospitals and care providers around the South Island."

"Ultimately, the Alliance’s vision is to change the way healthcare is provided, where patients are at the centre of the healthcare system, with the provision of better co-ordinated primary and hospital-based services. The new patient administration system will help enable that vision through a more connected health service, enhancing the care we can provide patients as well as improving patient safety."

The selection follows a rigorous process that saw 13 initial expressions of interest, narrowed down to a shortlist of three companies, which were considered by panels drawing clinicians, information technology specialists and health managers from around the South Island.

Dr Andrew Bowers said the Alliance was very pleased with how the selection process has gone. "We are confident our process is robust and that we have identified a provider we can work with to develop a truly innovative system. This is not just replacing the incumbent patient administration systems with a similar one - it is an opportunity to implement a system that will address the changing ways that we deliver health over the next 20 years."
