Organ Donation New Zealand responds to Israel priority system claim
Organ Donation New Zealand (ODNZ) has responded to claims by Dr Eric Crampton about Israel’s priority system for organ donation.
Dr Crampton head of research at The New Zealand Initiative told Paul Henry this morning that Israel’s ‘priority system’ – where donors are ranked higher on recipient waiting lists - was “pretty successful” in boosting that country’s organ donor rate.
Israel has dropped from 9.5 deceased donors per million population (DPMP) in 2013 to 7.6 DPMP in 2014. New Zealand meanwhile has gone from 8.1 DPMP in 2013 to 10.2 DPMP in 2014.
ODNZ advocates and teaches that every opportunity for deceased organ donation should be recognised by ICU staff and every family should have donation discussed with them by a health care professional with compassion, respect and appropriate knowledge and skill.
