Disney issues seizure warning about 'Incredibles 2' for fans with epilepsy
The Incredibles 2 movie opens in NZ today. If you're thinking of taking the family to it please be aware before booking that the film contains a sequence of flashing lights which might affect viewers with PHOTOSENSITIVE epilepsy.
There have been multiple reports from the US and UK where people with photosensitive epilepsy have had a seizure or have needed to leave the theatre during the movie.
Graeme Ambler, CEO Epilepsy New Zealand says, “We appreciate the efforts some theatres have already made to post warning signs for people waiting to see the movie. We would like to encourage all theatres to issue photosensitivity warnings. We understand that Disney has issued warnings on the screen but we think warnings should be made before people purchase tickets.”
About 3 percent of people with epilepsy, exposure to flashing lights at certain intensities, or with certain visual patterns, can trigger seizures. This condition is known as photosensitive epilepsy and it's more common in children and adolescents, especially those with generalized epilepsy and a type known as juvenile myoclonic epilepsy.
