Our community can help fight climate change
Luamanuvao Winnie Laban is today encouraging local communities to play their part and take action to help reduce New Zealand’s impact on climate change.
“We all need to play our part in the fight against climate change – for the sake of our stunning natural environment, our local economy, and our grandchildren,” says MP for Mana Luamanuvao Winnie Laban.
The Labour-led government yesterday unveiled plans for an emissions trading scheme that will put a price on harmful greenhouse gas pollution and encourage businesses and households to become more energy efficient.
“Climate change is one of the most significant global issues and our Porirua and Kapiti Coast communities are not immune.
“A region as naturally beautiful as ours cannot afford to do nothing. We must act now to protect our coastal landscape, our local businesses, local tourism, and our unique quality of life.
“We also have a positive opportunity to market our region to tourists and business as carbon neutral and sustainable.
“The Labour-led government is committed to tackling this global problem head on, and has outlined a number of policies to fight climate change. I know that our local community is resilient, smart and capable of making a difference.
“Turning off lights when not in use, installing energy efficient light bulbs and better insulation in homes, cutting out the use of plastic bags, and walking or taking a bus instead of using the car all add up and all help.
“Local Councils and local businesses must also play their part.
“I encourage all residents to visit www.climatechange.govt.nz and find out more,” said Laban.
