Police: Do What Is Right - Issue Tasers Now

The incident last night that resulted in a man being shot dead by police officers clearly highlights the need for Police to be issued with tasers, says New Zealand First law and order spokesman Ron Mark.

“While we do not know the exact circumstances leading up to the shooting, reports indicate the deceased was armed with a hammer. Had tasers been available, it is likely the attending police officers would not have had to resort to using lethal force,” said Mr Mark.

“As it stands now, officers have the option of using either a baton or lethal force when responding to incidents involving violence. This is too great a jump between response options.

“Tasers provide a level of force that fits between the two options, and it is patently obvious that such an intermediate step is needed in the Police toolkit.

“The recently ended year-long taser trial rubbished claims by the hysterical anti-taser groups that Police could not be trusted with such a device. The statistics clearly show that officers were judicious in their use of the taser, with it being presented 120 times during the trial and only discharged 19 times.

“Furthermore, reports from police on the beat were that tasers were a very effective tool for resolving a variety of situations.

“Despite the effectiveness of tasers, a final decision on their nationwide issue is not expected until next year. Last night’s incident, however, shows the need for this decision to be made expeditiously so Police on the beat have the right tools to do their job.

“My final message to the Police hierarchy is clear: be bold, be brave and do what you know is right – issue tasers to general duties officers now,” said Mr Mark.
