Lyn Provost Recommended As Next Auditor-General

The Officers of Parliament Committee, chaired by Speaker Lockwood Smith, has recommended the appointment of Lyn Provost as Controller and Auditor-General, in a report presented today. The recommendation is made with the unanimous support of all political parties represented in Parliament. Ms Provost currently is a Deputy Commissioner of Police.

Announcing the recommendation, Dr Smith said "The Controller and Auditor-General safeguards the financial integrity of New Zealand's parliamentary system of government. It is vital that the person appointed to this position has impeccable integrity and sound judgement. I am pleased that the committee was able to recommend Lyn Provost, who was chosen from a strong field of candidates."

The role of Controller and Auditor-General became vacant when Kevin Brady's term of appointment expired this year. By law, the Controller and Auditor-General may serve only one seven-year term.

The committee's report will be considered by the House of Representatives when it sits again from next week.
