Christchurch’s vulnerable may need more support

The Green Party is behind the Government’s interim reconstruction plans for Christchurch, while highlighting the need to protect the most vulnerable of its citizens.

"Infrastructure is vital to Christchurch’s recovery, but so is getting vulnerable citizens back on their feet," said Metiria Turei, Green Party Co-leader.

Cabinet decided today to contribute $5 million to the Mayoral Fund, which is targeted towards the most vulnerable. It will also release $94 million from an existing emergency works fund to start repairing roads.

The Prime Minister hinted that he may expand the home insulation fund to help with reconstruction and to replace broken chimneys with other forms of clean heating device.

Mrs Turei said many people live from payday to payday and rent their homes. Losing their homes and having their work disrupted by the earthquake may well go beyond their ability to cope.

“The Government needs make sure these Kiwis don’t experience further trauma.

“It is encouraging to hear that WINZ is contacting all the elderly in the region who are known to live alone,” Mrs Turei said.

Green MP Kennedy Graham pointed out that the earthquake didn’t discriminate between rich and poor, and neither should the Government’s response.

“Those without the means to cope may need more attention, more resources,” Dr Graham said.

“There is a wonderful outpouring of support between friends and neighbours. By targeting the most vulnerable, we ensure that nobody gets left behind.

“Like all Cantabrians, I welcome the announcement of an additional $5 million for vulnerable citizens.

“The Green Party stands ready to work alongside the National-led Government to build a more equal and sustainable Christchurch,” Dr Graham said.
