Govt should respect Auckland’s 30-year plan
The Government should respect Auckland’s 30-year plan and not seek to impose a central government view on the city’s future, the Green Party says.
Auckland Council today released a draft spatial plan for the city which included smart ideas for a green city and an inclusive economy.
Green Party MP David Clendon said Auckland Council had been elected with a significant majority and had a clear mandate from Aucklanders to plan the city’s future without being derailed by the Government.
“We welcome the draft Auckland Plan and support the right of Aucklanders to determine their own fate,” the Mt Albert-based MP said.
“This plan is far more ambitious than the Government's grey vision of more motorways and sprawl.”
Mr Clendon said the Plan focused on investing in children and young people, economic development opportunities in clean tech and renewable energy, meeting the challenge of climate change, sustainable buildings, good urban design and public transport.
“These are all win-wins. We can have a smart green economy that works for all of us.
“This plan shows we don't have to trade off the things that are most precious to us. In fact, they are needed for a richer New Zealand.”
Mr Clendon encouraged other Aucklanders to view the draft plan and have their say.
Public submission would be accepted from today until 25 October.
