Parliament’s time no longer used on lost luggage and electronic annual report bills

Parliament’s time will no longer be consumed debating Matt Doocey’s member’s bill, as a Supplementary Order Paper put forward by ACT Leader David Seymour has passed, adding Mr Doocey’s bill to the broader Statutes Amendment Bill. The infamous ‘lost luggage’ bill was felled by Labour’s Kris Faafoi using the same technique.

“It’s a worthy bill that gets rid of an outdated piece of red tape. But it’s minor in scope and extremely non-controversial. That’s why it’s more appropriate to be included as part of a broader bill,” says Mr Seymour.

“Parliament’s time is expensive, costing taxpayers $43,000 an hour. ACT believes that this funding should be used to debate major issues that affect New Zealanders.

“By freeing up space in Parliament’s agenda, we’ve made room for more substantial member’s bills to be debated. One example is the End of Life Choice Bill, which remains in the members’ ballot.”
