Key Must Not Be Fixated With Kaikoura Alone
The government must remember areas beyond Kaikoura that have been seriously impacted by Monday’s earthquake, says New Zealand First Deputy Leader Ron Mark.
“It has been disappointing to find the prime minister seemingly fixated with Kaikoura when he was asked for an update in Parliament today on how earthquake relief work was progressing.
“In three days he has visited Kaikoura several times but has not flown into Seddon, Ward, Hanmer Springs, Cheviot, Waiau or other affected areas by helicopter to offer moral support to locals who are struggling to get their lives back on course after this horribly traumatic event.
“New Zealand First hopes he will visit these towns and areas in the next few days.
“A British newspaper reported at midday today Hugh Wells, fire chief in Waiau, stating: ‘It has been very frustrating watching all the reporters flying around taking pictures but not landing to help us or see if we are OK.’
“The newspaper report added: ‘Although located only 80km south-west of Kaikoura – where a massive relief operation is under way – people in Waiau feel they have been left to fend for themselves.’
“Mr Key and the government must ensure all people affected by the earthquake receive the help and support they require as soon as possible,” Mr Mark says.
