Chinese miners in NZ to learn about mine safety

The Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union has welcomed a delegation of Chinese mining representatives who are visiting New Zealand to investigate safer mining practices.

The delegation consists of ten representatives from three northern China mines and two translators and is here on a joint invitation from the EPMU, the Department of Labour and Solid Energy.

EPMU National Secretary Andrew Little says the visit should help the push for better conditions in Chinese mines.

“The Chinese mining industry is one of the most dangerous in the world and has caused great concern to representatives of miners around the world, but this visit is a step toward better health and safety practices.

“Thanks to a strong and longstanding union presence in New Zealand’s mining industry we have a pretty good track record in mine safety, so the schedule for these delegates will focus on dealing with hazard and risk management and how these processes can be taken back to their operations.”

The delegation will be meeting with union representatives and the Minister of Labour, Ruth Dyson, on Tuesday.
