Commemoration of unionist this Sunday

While debate surrounding the Terrorism Suppression Act continues, unionists and activists will remember the life of an unionists murdered 95 years ago by police and the strike breakers they employed, says the National Distribution Union.

The commemorations will be held this Sunday the 11th at 11am, Waikaraka Park cemetery, Onehunga.

NDU Transport, Energy and Stores Sector Secretary Karl Anderson and Convenor of the FG Evans Memorial Sub Committee says that Frederick George Evans was batoned to death outside the Waihi Miners Hall during a Miners Strike in 1912.

“The continuing repression of trade unionists and activists fighting for social justice internationally and locally makes it twice as important that we don’t forget his death”, he says.

Mr Andersen says that Evan’s grave is easy to spot as it has a broken column that his workmates erected to signify a life taken so early.
