New Zealand Institute of Liquor Licensing Inspectors (NZILLI)

NZILLI welcomes the Law Commission recommendations that may see enhanced tools set in law for Inspectors to deal with errant licensees and persons who abuse liquor.

The report recommends giving inspectors the same powers of entry as the police and the ability to issue infringement offences. We see this as a necessary tool for the effective regulation and monitoring of licensed premises, says Murray Clearwater, President of the New Zealand Institute of Liquor Licensing Inspectors.

Our members have always said that our role is more than just processing liquor licence applications. The Law Commission recommends that the role of inspectors be enhanced to including monitoring, education and enforcement in addition to our reporting role. It is recommended that there be clear statutory reporting lines direct to the new District Licensing Committees that are to be set up in districts.
